Revolutionary War Veterans Graves Project

In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States, America 250-Ohio, in partnership with the Ohio State Historic Preservation Office, Terracon Consultants, Inc., Daughters of the American Revolution and Sons of the American Revolution, is documenting the grave sites of Revolutionary War veterans buried in Ohio.

Over 200,000 soldiers served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War (1775-1783). After the War, millions of acres in Ohio were set aside for veterans who received bounty land warrants to settle on. It is because of these lands, known as the United States Military Bounty and the Virginia Military Bounty, that as many as 7,000 veterans are buried in over 1,700 of Ohio’s cemeteries.

Public Researchers

In early 2025, we committed to begin a campaign to record the gravestones of American Revolutionary War veterans and patriots buried in Ohio. This effort, the first of its kind in the state, calls on all Ohioans to participate in field data collection. With over 7,000 veteran’s graves to document, WE NEED YOU to enlist as a Public Researcher!

JOIN US in the great task remaining before us—preserving the promise of those who pledged their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor, so that we may here resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain! It is our sacred duty, and privilege, to document the past so that generations yet unborn and unnamed may know the sacrifice and achievement of their fore-bearers.

For more information on contributing to the effort visit the Grave Marker & Cemetery Collection portal. All Public Researchers who do not wish to remain anonymous will be acknowledged for their contribution to the effort.

About America-250 Ohio

The Ohio Commission for the U.S. Semiquincentennial (also referred to as America 250-Ohio) was formed through the OH. Rev. Code § 149.309 and announced on March 1, 2022 on Ohio's Statehood Day by Governor Mike DeWine. The (29) member commission is charged with preparing the state to participate in the United States of America's 250th anniversary which culminates on July 4, 2026.

During this multi-year commemoration, Ohioans from our local communities in all 88 counties, will be the spotlight of the impact that has/is/will be made on our nation's story. From the many "Firsts" that came from Ohio, (i.e. Aviation, Universities/Colleges, National Organizations), to the sacred stories of our residents, and the unique areas of the state that continues to evolve, the rich content of our state will be an opportunity for all people to connect and see themselves in Ohio's story...as well as the story of our nation. Please join us!
