Revolutionary War Veterans Graves Project

As we approach the 250th anniversary of American independence in 2026, America 250-Ohio and the Ohio History Connection invite you to take part in an inspiring statewide initiative: The Revolutionary War Veterans Graves Project.

In collaboration with the Ohio State Historic Preservation Office, Terracon Consultants, Inc., and local chapters of the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution, this project seeks to identify, document, and map the final resting places of an estimated 7,000 Revolutionary War patriots buried in Ohio.

This is a unique opportunity to connect with Ohio's rich history and ensure that the sacrifices of these patriots are remembered for generations to come.

How to Participate as a Public Researcher

In early 2025, we committed to begin a campaign to record the gravestones of American Revolutionary War veterans and patriots buried in Ohio. This effort, the first of its kind in the state, calls on all Ohioans to participate in field data collection. With over 7,000 veteran’s graves to document, WE NEED YOU to enlist as a Public Researcher!

JOIN US in the great task remaining before us—preserving the promise of those who pledged their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor, so that we may here resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain! It is our sacred duty, and privilege, to document the past so that generations yet unborn and unnamed may know the sacrifice and achievement of their fore-bearers.

For more information on contributing to the effort visit the Grave Marker & Cemetery Collection portal. All Public Researchers who do not wish to remain anonymous will be acknowledged for their contribution to the effort.

FAQ for Public Researchers

I'm having trouble using the Grave Marker & Cemetery Collection Portal app. What should I do?

down arrow right arrow

We understand some users are experiencing issues, especially after downloading the Survey123 app. The most common problem is not being able to find the survey forms or being prompted to log in. We’ve updated the Field Collection Instructions to make the process easier. You can find them here: Guide to Field Collection for Public Researchers. Please pay special attention to Page 2 of the instructions. After installing the Survey123 app, you must access the Grave Marker Survey Form and the Cemetery Survey Form using the specific links (QR codes) provided in the guide. This step is essential to load the forms into your app. You do not need to create an account or pay for Survey123. If you're being asked to log in or subscribe, please revisit the instructions to ensure you’re following the correct access steps.

How do I know which Revolutionary War veterans are buried in my area?

down arrow right arrow

A great place to start in the DAR Revolutionary War Records search site. You can search for the City or County you are researching in, and that will bring up a list of the veterans documented to be buried in that area. Using this, along with websites like Find A Grave can help to narrow down your search. You can also reference the Find a Cemetery Near You on this page to help point you to cemeteries in your area that contain known Revolutionary War veterans.

I don't see a cemetery shown on the "Find a Cemetery Near You" map that I know has a Revolutionary War veteran buried in it, can you add it to the map?

down arrow right arrow

You can help us add a cemetery to the map by completing the Cemetery Survey form in the Survey123 app! Follow the instructions in the Guide to Field Collection for Public Researchers to download the Survey123 app and choose the Cemetery Survey Form option to get started.

How do I know which veteran graves and cemeteries have already been documented by public researchers?

Check in with our LIVE RESULTS MAP often to see what graves and cemeteries have already been collected.

NOTE: The information provided is for general informational purposes only and has not been independently verified to date. Final mapping and verification of all data will occur after the close of the Grave Marker & Cemetery Collection Portal.

My local community already has thorough documentation of Revolutionary War veteran graves and their locations. Can we share that information with you?

down arrow right arrow

Absolutely! Please see the Guide to Field Collection for Public Researchers for contact information to begin the process of sharing your documentation.

I know of a cemetery containing Revolutionary War veteran graves, but it is located on private property. How can I document graves that are not publicly accessible?

down arrow right arrow

We recommend contacting the landowner to request permission before entering any private property to document graves. If access is not possible, you can still submit information about the graves. Any details you can provide are still valuable to the project.

When does the project end?

down arrow right arrow

We intend to allow the collection of grave markers and cemeteries by Public Researchers until the end of this year. The finalized results of the survey will be published by July 4, 2026. However, our commitment to this project extends well beyond 2026. We will continue to update and maintain this important database, providing the public with tools to contribute and ensure the information remains accurate and current. Ohio’s State Historic Preservation Office and the Ohio History Connection is honored to serve as a trusted steward of this vital data for generations to come.

About America-250 Ohio

The Ohio Commission for the U.S. Semiquincentennial (also referred to as America 250-Ohio) was formed through the OH. Rev. Code § 149.309 and announced on March 1, 2022 on Ohio's Statehood Day by Governor Mike DeWine. The (29) member commission is charged with preparing the state to participate in the United States of America's 250th anniversary which culminates on July 4, 2026.
