Ohio's Revolutionary War Veteran Graves Project

Ohio's Revolutionary War Veteran Graves Project is a statewide public history initiative led by America 250-Ohio in partnership with Ohio's State Historic Preservation Office, Terracon Consultants, Inc., and local chapters of the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution.

Launched in advance of the nation’s 250th anniversary, the project uses existing research and crowdsourced fieldwork to identify, document, and map the final resting places of the estimated 7,000 Revolutionary War veterans across Ohio.

Although the primary data-collection campaign has concluded, the Ohio History Connection and Ohio's State Historic Preservation Office continue to steward the documentation and support ongoing public contributions.

How to Participate as a Public Researcher

JOIN US in the great task remaining before us - preserving the promise of those who pledged their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor, so that we may here resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain! It is our sacred duty and privilege, to document the past so that generations yet unborn and unnamed may know the sacrifice and achievement of their fore-bearers.

For more information on contributing to the effort visit the Grave Marker & Cemetery Collection portal. All Public Researchers who do not wish to remain anonymous will be acknowledged for their contribution to the effort.

Interested in continuing the work? The Interactive Live Results Dashboard and Survey123 application remain open and new submissions from Public Researchers at any level of experience or expertise are always welcome.

FAQ for Public Researchers

How do I know which Revolutionary War veterans are buried in my area?

down arrow right arrow

A great place to start in the DAR Revolutionary War Records search site. You can search for the City or County you are researching in, and that will bring up a list of the veterans documented to be buried in that area. Using this, along with websites like Find A Grave can help to narrow down your search. You can also see our Resources for Researching Veterans section below for more.

How do I know which veteran graves and cemeteries have already been documented by Public Researchers?

down arrow right arrow

Check in with our Interactive Live Results Dashboard often to see what graves and cemeteries have already been collected. Using the map's search bar, you can search for a veteran by last name or cemetery by cemetery name to see if they have been previously documented.

I know of a cemetery containing Revolutionary War veteran graves, but it is located on private property. How can I document graves that are not publicly accessible?

down arrow right arrow

We recommend contacting the landowner to request permission before entering any private property to document grave stones or cemeteries. If access is not possible, you can still submit information using the application. Any details you can provide are still valuable to the project.

I'm having trouble using the Grave Marker & Cemetery Collection Portal app. What should I do?

down arrow right arrow

We understand some users are experiencing issues, especially after downloading the Survey123 app. The most common problem is not finding the survey forms or being prompted to log in. We’ve updated the Field Collection Instructions to make the process easier. Please pay special attention to Page 2 of the instructions. After installing the Survey123 app, you must access the Grave Marker Survey Form and the Cemetery Survey Form using the specific links (or QR codes) provided in the guide. This step is essential to load the forms into your app. You do not need to create an account or pay for Survey123. If you're being asked to log in or subscribe, please revisit the instructions to ensure you’re following the correct access steps.

Is this something I can do from home or do I need to visit cemeteries in person?

down arrow right arrow

While some aspects can be done from home, like looking up veteran names and cemetery locations, this project is all about documenting current information - both photographs and GPS location. While older records and local surveys are incredibly valuable, what is unique about this project is that all information will have been captured between 2025 and 2026 - a relatively short window of time - giving us a snapshot of the current conditions of grave markers. This will be an incredible asset to future researchers for generations to come.

My local community already has thorough documentation of Revolutionary War veteran graves and their locations. Can we share that information with you?

down arrow right arrow

Absolutely! Please see the Guide to Field Collection for Public Researchers for contact information to begin the process of sharing your documentation.

What if there is an edit that needs to be made to the Project Dashboard?

down arrow right arrow

The Ohio History Connection and Ohio's State Historic Preservation Office will be setting up an online form in the very near future to accept data edits for the Revolutionary War Veteran Graves Project Dashboard. Please keep an eye out for that option.

When does the project end?

down arrow right arrow

Active data collection concluded on May 25, 2026. Submissions received after this date may not be reflected in the finalized results released on July 4, 2026.

In the future, the Ohio State Historic Preservation Office and the Ohio History Connection will continue to maintain and update this important database, providing the public with with tools to contribute and ensure the information remains accurate and current.

In the News

Ohio’s Revolutionary War Veterans Graves Project is gaining national attention!

The project was recently featured on PBS NewsHour as part of Judy Woodruff’s “America at a Crossroads” series.

The story highlights a growing grassroots effort, powered by dedicated Public Researchers, to locate, document, and preserve the final resting places of the state’s earliest veterans ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary.

About America 250-Ohio

The Ohio Commission for the U.S. Semiquincentennial (also referred to as America 250-Ohio) was formed through the OH. Rev. Code § 149.309 and announced on March 1, 2022 on Ohio's Statehood Day by Governor Mike DeWine. The (29) member commission is charged with preparing the state to participate in the United States of America's 250th anniversary which culminates on July 4, 2026.

During this multi-year commemoration, Ohioans from our local communities in all 88 counties, will be the spotlight of the impact that has/is/will be made on our nation's story. From the many "Firsts" that came from Ohio, (i.e. Aviation, Universities/Colleges, National Organizations), to the sacred stories of our residents, and the unique areas of the state that continues to evolve, the rich content of our state will be an opportunity for all people to connect and see themselves in Ohio's story...as well as the story of our nation. Please join us!
