NATIVE AMERICANS IN THE MIDWEST — THE HISTORIC ERA

nam 3Ohio’s American Indian heritage extends from the Ice Age to today! Archaeology is the key to the earliest chapters of this epic story, but the most recent chapters are recorded in the too often neglected histories of the American Indian tribes living here at the time of European contact. The Ohio Historical Society and Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Community College are working together to integrate Native American history and voices more fully into the American history curriculum. With the support of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Historical Society hosted a conference in August of 2013 that featured an intensive examination of the histories of the nine American Indian tribes most closely associated with the land we have come to know as Ohio. Now recordings of the presentations are available online, so you can learn about Ohio’s American Indian history from the panel of experts assembled for this historic conference.
