This is an informative study of medicinal plants used by American Indians around Ft. Ancient. As we revitalize our medicinal garden this year with new and different species, we’ll explore the vast knowledge of American Indian peoples in regards to how plants help humans.
Did you know that Red Willow has the same natural compounds as an aspirin? Staghorn Sumac and Purple Coneflower contain large amounts of Vitamin C. We’ll explore our garden and surrounding woods to learn about nature’s bounty.

BIO-Keith Bengston is a long time employee of the Ohio History Connection, former site manager of Fort Hill, Serpent Mound and SunWatch Indian Village with the Dayton Society of Natural History. He’s currently employed at Fort Ancient. Keith holds a B.A. degree in U.S. History and Native American Studies from Northland College in northern Wisconsin. He studied extensively with members of the Ojibwe Nation and numerous museums.
