Session 1:  August 9th at 1 p.m. - Introductory lecture at the Ohio History Center

Learn about the Big Darby Creek State and National Scenic River with the Ohio Scenic Rivers Program at ODNR.  Big Darby Creek has some of the best water quality and abundance of aquatic life of any stream in Ohio.  What makes it so special?  Learn about this river system, some of the fascinating wildlife that inhabits it, what they tell us about stream health.  Also explore threats to water quality, Division of Natural Areas and Preserves initiatives to protect it and everyday actions that can help.

Session 2:  August 23rd at 10 a.m. - Hands-on session at Battelle Darby Creek Metropark.

Learn about the Big Darby Creek State and National Scenic River with the Ohio Scenic Rivers Program at ODNR.  Big Darby Creek has some of the best water quality and abundance of aquatic life of any stream in Ohio. Start with a short walk to the river and learn how stream-side forests help stream life thrive.  Then wade into Big Darby Creek to net macroinvertebrates, or “stream bugs” such as crayfish and insects. Participants will learn how to identify these creatures and how they can be used to measure stream health.  Those who are interested can also sign up to become a stream quality monitoring volunteer at State Scenic River sampling locations.

WHAT TO BRING / WEAR:  Please wear close-toed shoes that can be worn into the water and clothes that can get wet.  Bug spray, a hat and water are also recommended.

DIRECTIONS:  The entrance to the Indian Ridge picnic area is located on Darby Creek Drive south of Alkire Road.  See the sign at the entrance and turn in the access drive.  Proceed approximately one mile, down a hill, and park at the second parking area on the left.  Google map pin to parking area:  https://maps.app.goo.gl/T1yZpiF9aNhtVd7Q7
