Experience life in a Civil War camp, see military demonstrations, ride in a Model-T, enjoy military band musical performances and more at Civil War Winter Camp at Spiegel Grove, the grounds of the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums.

This day-long event focuses on life in a winter camp like those of President Rutherford B. Hayes’ regiment, the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and takes participants inside the camp to see aspects of how soldiers lived during the war. The event includes a demonstration by the 5th U.S. Colored Troops, a kids’ event and a talk on President Hayes’ Civil War service. A newer aspect of the event is the inclusion of reenactors portraying Civil War veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic, a veterans organization of which Hayes was a member. Firelands Timeless Ts will offer free Model-T rides. These are being offered because Civil War veterans could have driven Model-Ts to their reunions. Roots Poultry’s food truck and Maumee Valley Heritage Corridor’s root beer stand will sell lunch and snacks. Refreshments are not included with admission. Camp tours last about 50 minutes and are outdoors. Please dress for the weather.

Tickets are required for tours. Band performances, military demonstrations and the Hayes Civil War service talk are free. Tickets and schedule will be available at rbhayes.org.

Tours of the Hayes Home and museum are not included with the Civil War Winter Camp tickets. However, Hayes Presidential is offering a 20-percent discount on site passes that include admission to the home and museum throughout the day on Saturday, Oct. 25.

Civil War Winter Camp is sponsored by Mosser Construction.
