Before they present at the Ohio Archaeological Council’s Fall Meeting on October 3, Ohio History Connection Archaeologist Brad Lepper and Archaeology Educator Milo Rossi will share their latest research with the public in a special one-night-only event.
Join us for “The Great Hopewell Road Revisited”—an updated look at one of Ohio’s most enduring ancient mysteries: a pair of straight, parallel earthen walls that may have once stretched more than 60 miles from Newark to the Chillicothe area.
First proposed by Lepper in 1995, the Great Hopewell Road theory has inspired decades of fascination and scholarly debate. This talk will explore new evidence, revisit key critiques and dive into the cultural reasons behind the public’s lasting interest.
- 5:30 or 6:15 p.m. – Meet & Greet sessions with Brad and Milo & reception
- 7–8 p.m. – Presentation and Q&A in the museum auditorium

In the presentation, Lepper will respond to major critiques of the theory, while Rossi takes on a compelling question raised by Archaeologist Dr. Mark Seeman: “Why has the Great Hopewell Road garnered so much public and media attention—and how do we bottle it?”
Event merchandise and limited-edition posters will be available onsite, with select items available for preorder during registration.
This event supports Ohio’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site: the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks. Proceeds help fund preservation, education and public programming that celebrates the legacy of the Indigenous Hopewell culture.
