Visit the Spirit of ’76 Museum, housed in Wellington’s historic former cheese warehouse, a reminder of the community’s once-thriving cheese industry. Constructed in the 1870s in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, the brick building retains distinctive features including round-arched window openings, recessed panels, pilasters, and a simple cornice.
Inside, learn about Archibald Willard’s famous Spirit of ’76 painting and its many “original” versions while viewing his work up close. Visitors can explore exhibits and artifacts highlighting local history, community life, and popular culture, including military history, the Lorain County Fair, early photography, and emergency services.
The museum’s upper floors feature collections of early tools, clothing, toys, household artifacts, photo albums, and library materials that offer a glimpse into everyday life of the past. Guests will also discover examples of how the famous “Trio” image appeared in advertising and popular culture through the years.
