Join us for the dedication of a new bronze plaque honoring Galion’s historic Pioneer Log House, followed by a rare opportunity to tour this remarkable early nineteenth-century structure. Built around 1822, the log house is one of Galion’s oldest surviving buildings and offers a unique glimpse into the community’s pioneer past.
Visitors will learn about the building’s many roles throughout Galion’s history. The structure served as Galion’s first public library from 1901 to 1904 before being relocated on the library property to make way for the construction of the Carnegie-funded Galion Public Library. It later became the first museum and meeting place of the Galion Historical Society and was also used as a residence.
When the building faced demolition in the 1980s, preservation advocates recognized its significance and worked to save it. The log house was carefully dismantled, relocated to Heise Park, and restored, ensuring that future generations could continue to experience this important piece of Galion’s history. Today, it stands as a testament to both the city’s pioneer heritage and the value of historic preservation.
