Step inside Sidney’s historic Monumental Building, a striking downtown landmark located within the Sidney Courthouse Square Historic District, listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Built in the 1870s as a memorial to Shelby County’s Civil War dead, the building reflects the community’s long tradition of public service, remembrance, and civic pride.
Visitors can view memorial plaques honoring Shelby County men who died during the Civil War and learn how Shelby County Veterans Services continues to support veterans and their families today. The building’s architectural details, historic setting, and ongoing public use help tell the story of how this landmark has remained part of community life for nearly 150 years.
While visiting, guests are also encouraged to see the Municipal Courtroom, located in the same building, where Civil War murals and the adapted historic interior add another layer to the building’s story.
