A local hero of the American Civil War will be highlighted and honored on Saturday, September 19th, at the Bethel Historical Museum, 235 W Plane St, Bethel, OH 45106.
James McMurchy was not only a hero, but a prisoner and survivor of Andersonville Prison. While in captivity, James secretly kept a small diary of the day-to-day activities in the prison. This diary was preserved by his family and donated to the Bethel Historical Society & Museum. Along with the diary are two ‘nubs’ of pencils that he used to write. Many Clermont County Civil Wars veterans were also named as being with him in prison. The diary was transcribed by a member of his family over the years, so many can read the experiences that James lived through and endured. This artifact will be on display from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Sept. 19, 2026.
