Poindexter 2024 Youth Poetry Challenge

From The Roots Of The Past To The Fruits Of the Future

In 2024, the Poindexter Village held the Afrofuturism Poetry Competition, a city-wide art challenge fostering poetry writing and exploration of the Afrofuturism genre among K-12 students. Afrofuturism is a cultural aesthetic and philosophy that combines elements of science fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, and Afrocentrism to explore the experiences of people of African descent. This competition provided a historical platform for students to express their thoughts, ideas, and visions of the future through poetry.

Winners were announced on July 1, 2024. The winners preformed their work at the 2024 Drum Circle on August 3, 2024.

1st Place Winner: Dionna Kendrick

2nd Place Winner: Brooklyn Munford, CAHS.
