COLUMBUS – The Ohio History Connection’s annual Poindexter Village Drum Circle event – organized in collaboration with the James Preston Poindexter Foundation and other local partners – will be held from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2, at the future site of Poindexter Village African American Museum, 290 N. Champion Ave.

A special announcement about the future museum, its design and expected timeline also is planned during the opening hour of the festivities.

Admission is free.

Guests of all ages will learn about the vibrant community and rich history of one of the first public housing developments in the United States: Poindexter Village.

The event will feature a traditional drum call-and-response, live entertainment, local artists, food trucks, drum-making and other hands-on activities and crafts.

“The Poindexter Village Drum Circle is a wonderful opportunity to learn about and participate in something larger than all of us,” said Shelbi Toone, Project Lead for the Poindexter Village African American Museum. “Guests will leave with new knowledge and appreciation of history here in central Ohio, but also with knowing what it means for us all to beat together, as one.”

Poindexter Village – named in honor of Columbus, Ohio community leader Reverend James Poindexter – was recognized by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as one of the nation’s first public housing developments on October 12, 1940. Today, the Poindexter Village community reflects Ohio’s place in the national story of the Great Migration.
