Mound Park

Mound Park is a centerpiece of the Portsmouth Earthworks Complex, which is the largest Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks site. The park includes the East Twin Horseshoe Mound and the Mound Park Conical Mound, the only remnants of these ancient structures within Portsmouth’s city limits. Simon Labold, the land's former owner, ensured their survival by donating the property to the city with the condition that it remain a park and preserve the earthworks.

Project partners have honored Labold’s vision well into the 21st century. Extensive archaeological investigations have helped protect the site and maintain its integrity. These studies guided the placement of new park features like basketball courts, baseball fields, tennis courts, and pickleball courts. For example, research informed the Mound Park Pickleball Club on where to avoid installing permanent bleachers, ensuring preservation of the earthworks.

This project is a model of balancing preservation with public use. It shows how modern amenities can coexist alongside ancient structures, creating a space that benefits the entire community. The efforts of Portsmouth Connex, the Hilltop Initiative Neighborhood Association, the City of Portsmouth, the Scioto Foundation, and the Scioto County Commissioners demonstrate a shared dedication to preserving history.
