Located in the historic Monumental Building is the beautiful Municipal Courtroom. The Monumental Building was created after the Civil War as a dedication to the Shelby County soldiers who lost their lives in the conflict. The present day Municipal Courtroom was originally used as an opera house in the 1870s. When you come in, you will notice the domed ceilings and ornate architecture, fitting for such lavish performances. Added to the room during the renovation, however, are murals depicting a Civil War story. It is an amazing location that you will not want to miss!
There is ramp access into the building and an elevator that can take you to the courtroom on the 3rd floor. While you are at the Monumental Building, be sure to visit the Veterans Services office on the first floor. They house memorial plaques for the men from Shelby County who died in the Civil War.
