Step into Morrow County’s past and meet the people who helped shape local and national history. Throughout the History Center, visitors will encounter costumed interpreters portraying historical figures and everyday citizens, including Betsy Ross, a Revolutionary War soldier buried in Morrow County, the granddaughter of a suffragette, Dr. T. P. Johnston, the first Morrow County soldier to lose his life during World War I, a local pottery worker, and a schoolteacher. Historical Society members will share information about the individuals they portray as visitors move through the museum and interact with each character.

You’ll “meet the past” in downtown building that has its own history. The Morrow County History Center was, until 2014, the First-Knox National Bank. The bank donated the building to the historical society, which converted it into a museum and opened in 2015. The building, on the square in Mt. Gilead, dates to 1862. The bank-turned-museum is a good example of how old buildings can be preserved by using them in new ways. Members will be on hand to answer questions about the conversion and show you the vault.
