The John Gee Black Historical Center, in partnership with the Ohio Open Doors and the Ohio History Connection cordially invites you to the Ohio Historical Marker Dedication Ceremony, commemorating the historic Lincoln Colored School in Gallipolis, Ohio.

Established in 1868, shortly after the end of the Civil War, the Lincoln Colored School served generations of Black students during an era of segregation in the United States. For nearly a century, the school stood not only as a place of education, but as an important institution within Gallipolis’ Black community—one that shaped the lives of countless students, families, and educators.

Following a successful lawsuit in 1918, The Lincoln Colored High School became the first court ordered integrated school in the state of Ohio. However, the Lincoln Colored Primary school closed its doors in 1951, and its story and significance have endured.
