Octagon Earthworks July 29 Open House, Noon to 4pm

 

Visitors are invited to experience, either self-guided or guided, the expansive Octagon Earthworks during the summer Open House.  The site will be open daylight to dusk, with special activities from Noon–4 p.m.
 
Guided Tours: All tours will start at the information signs by the parking lot.
 
12, 1, 2:30 & 3:15 p.m. Earthworks Overview: Learn about the American Indians who created these earthen masterpieces, why and how they were constructed, the geometry of the site and its alignment with the moon. Tour length is approximately 45 minutes long and includes extensive walking.
 
One in Ten: These ten minute talks at the information tables at the tent are perfect if you don’t have a lot of time to walk the site.
 
1:15 p.m. World Heritage: This overview will discuss World Heritage, Newark Earthworks contribution to the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks nomination and why these sites have a worldwide significance.
 
2:15 & 3 p.m: A ranger from the Hopewell Culture National Historic Park will share information on the unique features of the five National Park Service sites in Chillicothe that are included in the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks’ World Heritage nomination.
 
3:30 p.m. Lunar Alignments: An introduction to the 18.6 year cycle of the moon and how the Octagon aligns with all eight of the key “stand still points.”
