Dr. Riordan will describe the discovery of Moorehead Circle by remote sensing within the Fort Ancient Earthwork in 2005. The Moorehead Circle was archaeologically investigated between 2006- 2016. A timber post ring almost 60 meters in diameter is now understood to have been the most important locus of ceremonial activity at Fort Ancient during the second and third centuries A.D..
In this presentation, the director of Moorehead Circle excavations will describe its principal features, how he believes the Hopewell builders used it, and how their use of it may have changed over time.
