Coming Soon to a Blog Near You: “Freak of the Week”!

When I taught a vertebrate osteology course at a university, I was looking for a way for students to think about what they had learned and apply their knowledge to novel situations. Thus the idea was born to present the students with unusual skulls, bones, or teeth and see if they can identify them or maybe more importantly, use their newly gained knowledge of the subject to make educated interpretations of the specimens. Anyway, that all sounds a bit boring so to make it more interesting I named it “Freak of the Week”! It was then eagerly anticipated by the students, and they would work in groups to make an identification of an unknown specimen each week.
