The Charles G. Watson Papers consist of material and information dating from the later years of Mr. Watson's life and career. The collection is organized into two series and is divided topically into folders. This collection includes newspaper clippings, program pamphlets honoring Mr. Watson, personal correspondense as well as photographs.
The collection was donated to the Ohio Historical Society on May 15, 1995 by Mr. Lee Stamp. Charles G. Watson was the President of Youngstown Welding and Engineering Company from 1937 to 1958. Charles G. Watson was born on January 16, 1891 in Penfield, New York. Mr. Watson was educated in New York and received his formal education from Rochester Mechanics Institute and Columbia University, both in New York.
Mr. Watson began his working career as a teacher. He taught at several schools in New York and one in Ohio. He entered the engineering department of Youngstown Sheet & Tube in 1915. He later entered the military service in 1918 and served one year overseas. He worked for Youngstown Pressed Steel Company as a field engineer for one year and in 1920 began working for The William B. Pollock Company as an Assistant Chief Engineer. He served in this capacity until 1921, when he started working for The Youngstown Welding & Engineering Company, remaining with them until his retirement in 1958.
Charles G. Watson's accomplishments were many. Some highlights of his career include: he was the first to produce commercially welded alloy tubing in sizes above four inches, he developed two methods of putting rotating bands on shells for the U. S. Navy Ordnance, he designed and erected the first all welded steel building in the world (1926), he developed and patented a method of cladding with non-corrosive metals, rolls, tubes and shafts, and as President of Youngstown Welding & Engineering Company he was presented the Navy Department Certificate of Commendation for services during World War II.
Mr. Watson was the member of many organizational and Masonic clubs. He married Sally L. Leedy on June 3, 1920. He received numerous honors and awards over his lifetime. Mr. Watson died in 1970.

This series consists of various personal correspondence, information, newspaper clippings, special honors, a speech and programs concerning the personal and public life of Charles G. Watson. Also included is a copy of Mr. Watson's personal history and a brief family background.Series 2 -- Photographs of Charles G. Watson
Photographs are of Mr. Watson in later years of his life.
The Ohio Historical Society acquired the Charles G. Watson Papers in 1995. Marcelle R. Wilson processed the collection in 1996. The Ohio Historical Society owns the property rights of the collection. What rights the donor possessed in this collection have been dedicated to the public. Consideration of all other copyrights is the responsibility of the author and publisher. This collection is open under the rules and regulations of the Ohio Historical Society.
