Scope and Content

The P. Arthur D'Orazio Architectural Drawings collection is comprised of drawings for buildings and renovations created by Mr. D'Orazio during his career as an architect in Youngstown, Ohio. The one hundred ten projects represented were located in Eastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania, clustering in Mahoning and Trumbull counties. They are representative of the scope and style of his work.

P. Arthur D'Orazio, a prominent Ohio architect, was born in Youngstown in 1909. He graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology School of Architecture in 1934, and by 1940 he was associated with Myron Goodwin, a Youngstown architect. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers from 1943-1945. In 1950, Mr. D'Orazio established his own architecture practice in Youngstown, Ohio.

During his career, Mr. D'Orazio designed over 500 buildings. These included more than fifty churches, more than fifty schools, and nearly one hundred residences, as well as banks, libraries, pools, and apartment buildings. Mr. D'Orazio received numerous awards for his work from the Church Property Administration, the Church Architectural Guild of America and the American Institute of Architects.

Mr. D'Orazio served as president of the Eastern Ohio Chapter of the American Institute of Architects in 1964, and as president of the Architects Society of Ohio in 1970-1971. For many years, he served as a member of the Ohio State Board of Building Code Appeals, the Building Code Review Committee and the Youngstown Design Review Board. In 1970, Mr. D'Orazio served as a member of Ohio Governor Gilligan's Citizens Task Force on Environmental Protection.

P. Arthur D'Orazio retired from professional practice in 1985.
