Scope and Content

The William F. Schwartz Republic Steel Collection consists of 822 photographs from Republic Steel Corporation's Youngstown, Warren, and Southern districts. The photographs are dated 1914-1966 and include views of buildings, construction, exterior scenes, mill machinery, and steelworkers. The majority of the photographs consist of the construction of the #1 blast furnace in 1942. The #1 blast furnace was the second blast furnace completed in the United States under the Defense Plant Corporation program and was first used October 12, 1942 at Youngstown, Ohio. The collection also includes photographs of the coke plant constructed at Youngstown in 1915. There are also a number of construction photographs of the Warren District's soaking pits and hot and cold strip mills in 1956 and 1957.

Organization of the Collection

This collection consists of one series in three containers. The photographs within the containers are arranged alphabetically according to district name, then plant name, then department name.

Provenance

The William F. Schwartz Republic Steel Collection was donated to the Ohio Historical Society by William F. Schwartz in May, 1998. The collection was processed by April Caruso and Mike Kenneally in 2003. The Ohio Historical Society owns the property rights to this collection. What copyrights the donor possessed in this collection have been dedicated to the public. Consideration of all other copyrights is the responsibility of the researcher. This collection is open under the rules and regulations of the Ohio Historical Society. Researchers are requested to cite the collection name, collection number, the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor Archives/Library, and the Ohio Historical Society in all footnotes and bibliographical references.
