The Niles Historical Society Collection includes one hundred sixty (160) volumes of ledgers, journals, letter books and stock certificates. In addition, there are approximately fifteen cubic feet of documents, including correspondence, shipping orders, lease agreements, mining records, employment office records, patent and trademark information and merger documents.
The Niles Fire Brick Company was organized in 1872 by John R. Thomas, and played a key role in the development of the Mahoning Valley's steel industry. The company acquired high grade clay reserves in Clarion and Beaver counties, Pennsylvania, to supply raw material for their fire brick works. Mining and shipping operations were handled through Thomas & Company.
In 1876 John Thomas patented an improved composition fire brick, which was manufactured to specification for lining rolling mills and blast furnaces. Seventy-five percent of Niles Fire Brick Company's high grade refractory fire clay products were sold to Ohio steel plants to line their furnaces.
At its peak, the Niles Fire Brick Company employed two hundred workers, including skilled Italian workers and Appalachian laborers recruited from Kentucky. Company housing units were built, and the Italian Catholic workers faced strong Ku Klux Klan activity in the 1920's.
The company suffered from the effects of the Great Depression in the 1930's, and reduced, sold or merged its interests. In 1956, Niles Fire Brick Company merged with Mexico Refractories Company, Missouri, becoming the Niles Fire Brick Division of the Mexico Refractories Company.
