Scope and Content

This collection contains the photographic records and annual reports of the Buckeye Coal Company. The Buckeye Coal Company was a subsidiary of the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company and supplied coal for its steel mills. The Buckeye Coal Company included the Nemacolin, Dehue, Brier Hill, Redfield, and Mahan Mines. This collection consists of 2,500 photographs and negatives documenting the operations of these mines. Also included are the annual reports for the mines of the Buckeye Coal Company for the years 1921-1946. Included in these reports is information on production, accidents, and construction and expansion programs.

 

Organization of the Collection

This collection is organized into three series: documents, photographs, and photographic negatives.

Series I: Documents: This series consists primarily of the annual reports of the mines of the Buckeye Coal Company. These reports contain information on mining activities, statistical data, production, and maps of the mines and surrounding areas. Reports are available for the following mines and years: Dehue: 1923-1946; Brier Hill: 1923-1933; Nemacolin: 1921-1946; Redfield Mine: 1923-1927; and Mahan Mine 1923-1926. The folders in this series are arranged chronologically.

Series II: Photographs: This series contains photographs showing various aspects of the mining operations. It includes photographs of the Dehue Mine (1921-1945); Brier Hill Mine (1926-1929); and Nemacolin Mine (1924-1946). This series is arranged by mine and is divided into photographs of interior operations within the mines, exterior operations outside of the mine, and processing operations.

Series III: Photographic Negatives: This series includes negatives of many of the photographs in Series II. Also included are glass slides and various negatives of a personal nature such as Christmas and birthday parties, award ceremonies, and family events.

 

Provenance

The Buckeye Coal Company Collection was donated to the Ohio Historical Society by Robert Korcheck in 1996. The collection was processed by David James, Harley Hall, and Pat Carbon in 2003. The Ohio Historical Society owns the property rights to this collection. What copyrights the donor possessed in this collection have been dedicated to the public. Consideration of all other copyrights is the responsibility of the researcher. This collection is open under the rules and regulations of the Ohio Historical Society. Researchers are requested to cite the collection name, collection number, the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor Archives/Library, and the Ohio Historical Society in all footnotes and bibliographical references.
