Scope and Content

Mahoning County Views is a collection of ninety-five black and white, 8 x 10 photographs representing Mahoning County scenes of rural and urban landscape, people and buildings from the time period of 1905-1910. Descriptive terms used to describe and differentiate the photographs were assigned to the pictures by Marcelle R. Wilson (processor), local names and places were stamped on a few photographs, and are used where available.

Mahoning County was created by the legislative act of February 16, 1846, with its county seat located in Canfield. The county seat was later relocated to Youngstown because of its larger population and popular support in the area. The pictures in the Mahoning County Views collection show a wide array of the area. The collection is divided into five series.

Series List

Series 1--The Built Environment
Series 2--The Landscape; Rural and Farm Life
Series 3--Leisure Activities

The second series includes pictures of farms, rivers and streams, roads and the countryside. Series three features people in various activities and events which are not work related. Series four concentrates on the various industries in the area and the equipment, buildings/plants and people involved in them. The final section shows people of the era in various poses in both family and public situations. There is one photograph per file.
