Scope and Content

The Industrial Drawing and Blueprint Collectionconsists of drawings, blueprints, sketches, maps, and charts from the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company (YS & T), Jones and Laughlin Steel (J & L), Sharon Steel, Bethlehem Steel, Carnegie-Illinois Steel, Kaiser Refractories, and the Erie Lakawanna Railroad. Also contained are maps of various portions of the Mahoning Valley, including the Youngstown and Warren metropolitan areas. The materials in the Industrial Drawing and Blueprint Collection are arranged by the company for which the drawings were made, the particular works in which the drawings were used, the mills within which the works to which the drawings pertain, and then chronologically.

Drawings from YS & T constitute the bulk of the collection, followed by those from J & L, which are dated after the consolidation of those companies. Represented within these drawings are important construction, engineering, and machinery firms which were vital to the steel industry. These include: McClintic-Marshall Construction, the Julian Kennedy engineering firm, Morgan Construction, Mesta Machinery, Atlas Car Manufacturing, William B. Pollock Co., and United Engineering & Foundry Company. It is unknown how the Sharon Steel, Kaiser, Erie Lackawannna, and Bethlehem illustrations came into this collection. Series List

Series 1 - Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co.
This series consists of reliefs, elevations, arrangements, and overall layouts of properties, buildings, and machinery in the Brier Hill, Campbell, Struthers and Hubbard Works. These include elevations of blast furnaces, which were constructed before World War I; the open hearth furnaces, including building and furnace construction plans which date from between 1909 and 1925; blooming mills and ingot re-heating "pit" furnaces which illustrate technological advances over the period of the 1930s through the 1950s; and 84" and 110" tandem plate mills. Also included are construction plans for a Marion Electric Shovel, which was considered a technological marvel for the 1920s; boiler and power house; arrangements of gas and water mains; various pieces of rolling stock, including plans for a Hulett Patented Moveable Dump Car dating from 1907; elevations and refractory blueprints of the lap-weld, butt-weld, and seamless tube mills, which illustrate the varying methods of tube production from the pre- and post- World War II eras; general plant and machinery arrangements; and proposal drawings for the construction of a basic oxygen furnace, dating from 1975, which was never built. Last are nine fuel cost and efficiency charts that date from World War II, which are incomplete.

Series 2 - Jones and Laughlin Steel
This series consists of drawings of the Brier Hill cold drawn bar mill and prospective plans dating from the early 1980s for its modernization by J & L; modernization plans for the Campbell seamless tube mills from the same period; pertinent drawings from the J & L Aliquippa Works, on which the modernizations were to have been based.

Series 3 - Sharon Steel Corp.
This series consists of drawings of the blast furnace at Sharon Steel's Roemer Works in Farrell, Pennsylvania, pertaining to its 1971 refractory re-lining.

Series 4 - Kaiser Refractories
Kaiser Refractories was the parent company of the Niles Fire Brick Company of Niles, Ohio, which specialized in the production of refractory bricks used in steel plant furnaces and machinery. This series consists of recommendations for standard linings in a: blast furnace, hot blast stove, electric furnace, basic oxygen furnace.

Series 5 - Erie Lackawanna Railroad
This series contains: drawings, dated 1962, for the construction of a depot office and water tower at the Erie's Cleveland freight yards, as well as track maps from the Erie-owned Cleveland and Mahoning Valley Railway Company which date from 1941.

Series 6 - Bethlehem Steel Corporation
This series contains drawings of the ignition furnace in Bethlehem Steel's sintering plant at its Franklin, Pennsylvania works dating from 1959.

Series 7 - Carnegie-Illinois Steel Co.
This series consists of two plant layout drawings from the Ohio Works of the Carnegie-Illinois Steel Company, the major subsidiary of the United States Steel Corporation.

Series 8 - Buckeye Coal Co.
This series consists of one drawing of a 15 ton skip loader used at the Nemacolin (PA) Mine, Buckey Coal Co., a subsidiary of Youngstown Sheet & Tube.

Series 9 - Maps
This series includes: street maps of the Youngstown-Warren metropolitan area; highway maps of Ohio and Mahoning County; district maps for the Ohio House and Senate; ward and precinct maps for: Youngstown, Struthers, Lowellville; and a national district map from the United Steelworkers of America.

Provenance

The Ohio Historical Society acquired the Industrial Drawing and Blueprint Collection in 1987. James M. Allgren processed the collection in 1994. The Ohio Historical Society owns the property rights to the collection. What rights the donor possessed in this collection have been dedicated to the public. Consideration of all other copyrights is the responsibility of the author and publisher. This collection is open under the rules and regulations of the Ohio Historical Society. Researchers are requested to cite the collection name, collection number, the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor, and the Ohio Historical Society in all footnotes and bibliographic references.
