The Ecumenical Coalition of the Mahoning Valley, Inc. Records consists of a wide variety of materials that deal primarily with the Coalition's efforts to reopen the closed steel mills and their financial records. The collection includes 1.5 cubic feet of material that is divided into five series and is organized topically into folders. These folders are arranged chronologically within each of the groupings. The exceptions to this rule are the folders entitled Letters and Miscellaneous Notes. Letters are arranged first alphabetically then chronologically. Miscellaneous Notes were kept in their original order since most of the papers were not dated. The Ecumenical Coalition of the Mahoning Valley (ECMV) was formed in 1977 through the efforts of James W. Malone, bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Youngstown, John H. Burt, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio, and Reverend Charles Rawlings, a Presbyterian Minister. The name Ecumenical Coalition was decided upon by its members to allow others to understand that this group represented all of the religious denominations of the Mahoning Valley including The United Methodist, Christian Church, United Church of Christ, Jewish, Baptist, Roman Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox. The Coalition took great efforts in trying to bring back the social and economic well being that had once existed in the Youngstown metropolitan area.
The Mahoning Valley Ecumenical Coalition folded in mid-1980 after several attempts at reopening the steel mills in the area. Overall the Coalition did little to change the collapse of the industry in Youngstown. Yet, the commendable efforts of the Coalition deserve recognition. The Coalition gave the people a glimmer of hope that they could bring back prosperity to Youngstown. It also gave the people of Youngstown a chance to voice their own opinions, and show the Lykes Corporation, then owners of the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company, that the community would not allow them to completely take advantage of the steelworkers. The Ecumenical Coalition was not successful in terms of reopening the mills but it did provide community solidarity when the townspeople needed it most.
The first series in this collection is made up of materials from various community groups that were affiliated with the Ecumenical Coalition in their efforts to reopen the steel mills, such as the Mahoning Valley Economic Development Committee and CASTLO. Other materials are from various national agencies that ECMV associated with in their campaign to reopen the steel mills, like the Catholic Committee of Urban Ministry.
Materials in this series are studies put out by local and national organizations on the economic feasibility of the reopening of the mills. The majority of the studies were written specifically for Youngstown area while others were used as examples from other areas around the nation as well as other countries. For example The Youngstown Demonstration Planning Project was put out by the National Center for Economic Alternatives under the direction of Gar Alperovitz. It is a detailed account of what needed to be done to reopen the mills and evaluates the economic and social situation of the Mahoning Valley.
The third Series in this collection is made up of Letters, Newsletters, Articles and other Publications, Speeches, Addresses, Appointment Books, Legal Services, Resolutions, Memoranda, and Miscellaneous Notes. The Letters are arranged alphabetically by the senders last name and then chronologically. The Miscellaneous Notes have been kept in there original order since many of the papers are not dated. After close examination drafts of memoranda, speeches, reports and agendas are found in these papers. Some of the materials in the folders labeled Unemployment Compensation and Federal Withholdings and Social Security were photocopied and Social Security numbers were blacked out.
Many of the receipts that were originally part of this collection have been removed since all of this information could be accounted for in the Ledger, Cash Disbursement Records, and Income and Expenses folders. Other materials in this collection are tax, payroll, and insurance information. The folder entitled Legal, December 28, 1977- April 1, 1980 gives a detailed account of the legal services that were required by the Coalition.
