Project Summary: Educational Outreach for Exhibition: 1905 Photographs by H.F. Woods of Taft Expedition to Japan, Philippines, and China Under the auspices of our nonprofit partner, the Friends of the William Howard Taft Birthplace, located in Cincinnati, Ohio, we have raised the funds to digitize and create copy negatives and scans of the images taken by Harry Fowler Woods when he accompanied Taft on his 1905 trip to Asia. We are planning to print and frame around one hundred of the photographs for exhibition. The first of these will take place on April 20th, 2007, at the William H. Taft National Historic Site in Cincinnati, Ohio. The exhibition includes ancillary educational material such as the website, the museum catalogue, and a teacher’s guide. The teacher’s guide can be downloaded from this website and the museum catalogue and guide can be purchased from the William Howard Taft National Historic Site. In 1905, William Howard Taft, then Secretary of War under President Theodore Roosevelt, embarked on a diplomatic mission to Japan and the Philippines. His representatives also traveled to China. Woods and a smaller group traveled afterwards to Burma, India, Egypt, and Greece. Accompanying Secretary Taft with a total of around eighty individuals were seven U.S. Senators and twenty-three U.S. Congressmen, Roosevelt’s daughter, Alice, and several of his friends from Cincinnati, Ohio, including a young businessman, Harry Fowler Woods. Harry Fowler Woods, a friend of Taft’s, was an amateur photographer who owned what was probably at the time state-of-the-art photographic equipment manufactured by the Eastman Company (later called Eastman Kodak).
