"STEPPING THROUGH TIME WITH HISTORY"
Up to 45 minute program: Grades 4th - 8th
Mrs. Putnam takes you on a journey through nearly 2600 years to explore people who first inhabited our
lands. (Pre-historic Adena & Hopewell cultures, Native Americans, and Ohio Pioneers) What
pre-historic Native American mounds existed when the pioneers arrived in Marietta? What do the mounds
look like today? Explore tools and decorative items used by Native Americans. Finally, step into the
pioneer period via a virtual slide tour as Mrs. Putnam takes you into her home, the Rufus Putnam
house, a 1788 Marietta, OH home. Then students, get ready to meet Mr. Putnam himself!
"RIVERS: FROM CANOES TO SAILING VESSELS TO STEAMBOATS"
Up to 45 minute program: Grades 4th - 8th
Program One: First and Third Fridays of each month.
Program Two: Second and Fourth Fridays of each month.
In the first program, students embark on a riverboat ride from the mid-1700s using birch bark and
dugout canoes, and flatboats. First person interpreters share stories relating to their first trip
down the Ohio River. Next, Mr. Commodore Whipple enthusiastically explores the early sailing vessel
building days in Marietta. Math is brought into the equation as students use a mileage table to
determine distances between Ohio River cities. Older students work on solving speed and distance
problems. In the second program, a first person interpreter (riverboat pilot) introduces students to
steamboat history by sharing information of the first steamboats to come down the Ohio River. Next,
the pilot takes students on a virtual tour of the W.P. Snyder, Jr. Steamboat. After learning the
basics of steamboat travel, they put their minds to work solving more math problems relative to
steamboat speed.
