Description: Fred Alverson, a speech writer during Governor Richard Celeste's first term, 1983-1987, maintained subject files that illustrate the tasks he performed. These included: preparing speeches, writing newspaper or magazine columns, and press releases; drafting letters for the governor's signature; and working with individuals outside the Celeste administration who drafted speeches for the governor. The largest portion of Alverson's files consists of news clippings concerning Governor Celeste's speeches or appearances, and potential speech topics, including: economic development; the Edison Program; education; health care; mental health; the Superconducting Super Collider; travel and tourism; homelessness; the governor's reelection campaign in 1986; pay equity; domestic violence; and child care. Alverson's files also contain copies of Governor Celeste's speeches, in both final and draft form; press releases; copies of memoranda and letters from Governor Celeste, his staff, state agency officials, and private citizens; and Alverson's handwritten or typed memoranda to the governor or other office staff members. The letters and memoranda pertain to discussions about speech topics, the speech writing process, and the impact of the governor's speeches.
