The tax commissioner is the principal administrative officer of the Department of Taxation. The department is responsible for enforcing Ohio tax laws and has the discretion to establish such a structure as will render the administration of the tax laws efficient and effective. Many types of taxes are included in their jurisdiction, including: sales tax; property tax; personal income and corporate franchise tax; estate tax; excise, motor vehicle and highway use tax; public utility tax, and tax equalization.
