The Ohio Department of Transportation was created by the General Assembly in 1972, as the successor to the Department of Highways. The department is charged with all activities pertaining to planning, designing, construction and maintenance of all roads in the state system. It also is responsible for defining goals and objectives and develops policies and procedures for all programs within its jurisdiction such as: public transportation, rail transportation, aviation, bicycle and water transportation. In short, the agency is charged with developing and maintaining a multi-modal state transportation system.
