websiteMRDD was formed as a separate state agency after a split of the Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation, which occurred in 1980. This department is a human services agency that administers, promotes, sets standards for and provides leadership for statewide programs, services and supports for persons with mental retardation and developmental disabilities. The agency works closely with and approves programs provided by the 88 county boards of mental retardation and developmental disabilities, who are responsible for providing services in each county. The agency also licenses community residential facilities throughout the state as well as provides funding for them. It also directly provides residential services at 12 state-operated developmental centers located throughout Ohio.
