Would you like our opinion on a technical question? Even if we cannot make an actual site visit, contact our Technical Preservation Services (TPS)
staff via email and take us on a “Virtual Site Visit” of your building.
A “Virtual Site Visit” is designed for those who have one or two specific technical preservation questions. A virtual site visit might
include, but is not limited to, these types of questions
Is the proposed design for my altered storefront compatible to my building?
What do I do about failing paint?
How do I address my failing mortar?
Why is my basement floor wet all the time?
My windows are drafty, what can I do?
All of our responses are based on and will meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation. Click
here to view the standards online. Although we cannot answer structural
electrical, heating, cooling, or plumbing questions, we can advise you on where to sensitively place mechanicals to have the least possible impact
on historic fabric. If you have a structural concern, it is recommended that you contact a licensed structural engineer.
To be of greater assistance to you as you take the TPS team on your virtual site visit, please include the following information in your
email:
- The historic and current name and complete address of your property
- Has an Ohio Historic Inventory Form been completed for your property or is the property listed on the National Register of Historic Places?
- A brief of history of your building
Knowing the date of construction and historic uses of the building is helpful to us. Tell us of any changes (with dates) that may have occurred to
your building.
- Clear, well-focused overall interior and exterior color photographs of your building
A large number of photos are not needed (images cannot be larger than 1 megabyte (MB)), just enough to give us an overall picture of your building
and site. Remember, we will likely never see your building in person, so supply us with sufficient photos to give us a good idea of what your building and
site look like – take us on a virtual site visit!
- Clear, well-focused photos of the area(s) for which you have specific questions or concerns
Supply us with enough visuals of your specific problem area to give us a reasonable picture of your situation (images cannot be larger than 1 MB). For
example, if you have a concern about failing paint, show us (in your photographs) the area that is failing. Also show us what is above, below,
behind, and around the area so that we may be able to see a cause for the failure of the paint.
- A list of your specific questions/concerns
Be as detailed as you can, so we can be as helpful as possible. When did you first notice your issue? Has it gotten worse? Is it more evident at
certain times of the year?
- Any sketches or drawings that you think might be useful to us in answering your questions/concerns (images cannot be larger than 1 MB)
We cannot design your project for you, but we can certainly react/respond to design concepts that you send to us.
- Your name, telephone number, and the best time during business hours to reach you (we’ll already have your email address) so that we can contact
you with any questions we may have
- Send your email to ohpo@ohiohistory.org.
You can expect a response from us within four business days of receipt. Our TPS team will review and respond to your inquiry. Keep in mind that
all emails, including emails that contain attachments must be under 1 MB. To get around this limit, you are welcome to send us more than one email, but no more
than five, so our system won’t be overloaded. In the subject line please name the email Technical Preservation Services Virtual Site Visit so that
our computer’s filter will not block your email. If you do not hear from us within four business days of sending your email, please contact our
office at (614) 298-2000 to ensure that we received it. If you are also interested in State and Federal Rehabilitation tax credits, please visit
our main website www.ohpo.org for information.
