Dayton’s Old Montgomery County Courthouse is a masterpiece of Greek Revival architecture. A unique
collaboration between Montgomery County and the Montgomery County Historical Society -- which has
since merged with Carrillon Park to become known as Dayton History -- has restored the 19th century
courthouse while creating a functional meeting and special event center. Montgomery County
committed to restoring the building to an acceptable level for any public building, and the
Historical Society mounted a campaign to raise the additional money needed to restore the interiors
and furnish the first floor. The project was planned by Jeff Wray Architects of Dayton and Schooley
Caldwell Associates of Columbus. Stone details that had been covered and painted were stripped and
repaired, the atrium was restored, the original interior paint scheme was carefully uncovered and
recreated, oval skylights were rebuilt and reglazed, period light fixtures were installed, and
original gas lanterns flanking the entrance were restored and repiped. Today, the Old Montgomery
County Courthouse is once again at the center of public life in Dayton.

National Register of Historic Places, reviews federally-assisted projects for effects on Ohio's
historic, architectural, and archaeological resources, consults on the conservation of older
buildings and sites, and offers educational programs and publications.
