Cincinnati
Established in 1869, the Art Academy of Cincinnati is an independent college of art and design
devoted to educating students in the visual arts through a four-year undergraduate program; a
graduate program for art teachers; and community education classes that enroll 2,000 adults and 500
children each year. Recently the Art Academy embarked on its own creative project, converting two
historic builings -- the 1923 Rosenthal Printing Company Building and the 1910 Shillito Furniture
Warehouse -- into an impressive arts education center. The $13 million project, funded by private
donations, City of Cincinnati grants, and the Rehabilitation Investment Tax Credit offered through
the Ohio Historical Society's Ohio Historic Preservation Office, represents a major investment in
Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine Historic District. The arrival of the college has brought new people
and programs to the area and helped to energize further development, notably student housing and
the relocation of a theatre company across the street. Work to the two historic buildings included
repointing the exterior, restoring industrial steel windows, creating a new entrance and a
seven-story atrium, and installing new classrooms, studios, and galleries as well as new systems to
support art studios of all types. The approach combined historic preservation and sustainable
design, preserving the industrial character of the buildings, leaving the concrete structure
exposed, and creating a stimulating environment for arts education.
