Cincinnati
"Lost Cincinnati: Why Buildings Die" showcases Queen City landmarks that are gone, and explains why.
The exhibit is organized around eight “causes of death”: fires; natural disasters; structural
failure; obsolescence; the automobile; urban renewal; changing land uses; and financial factors.
The premise is that understanding these causes will help us preserve the buildings that remain.
Beth Sullebarger of Sullebarger Associates curated the exhibit, and Scott Risner of TiER 1
Performance Solutions directed the design. Funding was provided by the Luther Foundation,
Cincinnati's Fine Arts Fund, and the Architectural Foundation of Cincinnati. Hosted by Cincinnati’s
Betts House Research Center, the exhibit has been made available to viewers beyond the Betts House
through related web pages, PowerPoint presentations, and TV coverage. Presentations have been made
at the Mercantile Library, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati Observatory Center, and on
Cincinnati Educational Television. The exhibit is a model for other communities in that it goes
beyond the familiar 'lost landmarks' formula to examine why buildings die, in the hope of reducing
similar losses in the future.
