CAROLINE LORD (1860-1928)
Caroline Lord, born in 1860, was the daughter of the president of the Lafayette, Indianapolis, and Cincinnati Railroad. She studied at the Fine Arts Academy with Thomas Satterwhite Noble and Lewis Lutz. It was while she was at the Academy, that Lord became close friends with the well-known Cincinnati painter Elizabeth Nourse, a friendship that lasted many years. In 1890, she traveled to Paris to study at the Julian Academy and in 1892 she went to New York and studied with the artist and illustrator Kenyon Cox.
The theme of Lord's art work often revolved around the struggles of the common laborer, women, and children. Her paintings that show women at work at the turn of the century are historically valuable, because they are subjects that were infrequently depicted in art at that time.
Lord eventually became a member of the Cincinnati Art Academy faculty and taught there for more than 25 years. She died in Cincinnati in 1928.
