Genealogy Workshops

Introduction

The Ohio Historical Society Archives/Library (OHS), the Franklin County Genealogical and Historical Society (FCGHS) and the Columbus Metropolitan Library jointly offer a series of programs designed to introduce family history researchers to the many records and resources available to them.

The workshops will offer an in-depth introduction to the basic methods, tools and sources for getting started in your family history research. These programs are recommended to those who have not previously had genealogical instruction or who are looking to refresh or jump-start their genealogical research skills. Continuing education hours can be credited to teachers.

Several courses will be held each month with some courses repeated throughout the year.

Many sessions will be held at The Ohio History Center, but some will be held at the Main branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library. Saturday Workshops are held from 10 am to 12 pm.

Understanding The Probate Process (GW4)
When a person is deceased the probate process prescribes the disposition of his or her assets. Very often the probate file is a veritable gold mine of genealogical information. This course describes the probate process both when there is a will and when no will exists. It explains the legal language involved so that one is able one to recognize various documents and understand their purpose. The value of other court cases as genealogical date sources is also discussed as well as the relevance of land records involved in probate. The course includes a description of land surveys and land record files with their location in the courthouse.

How to Research Objects and How to Care for Them (GW28A&B)
Your great-great grandmother taught grades 1-8 in a one room schoolhouse. Have you wanted to see the McGuffey’s Reader she might have used? Your great-grandfather worked at Roseville Pottery in Zanesville, Ohio. Would you like to see a dish that he might have created? This class will show how objects in the Ohio Historical Society’s collections might help you understand the lives lived by people documented in paper record research. Do you have family heirlooms that you might want to know the history of? Have you wondered how to care for the china or the antique chair that have been kept in your family for generations? How to handle them and proper lighting and temperatures will be discussed. Bring an object and our history curators will assist you. This class will introduce you to searching for objects of interest in the Ohio Historical Society’s Online Collection Catalog.

Family History Research: War Of 1812 (GW30A)
Are you interested in how to research the experience of a soldier during the War of 1812? Are you having difficulty identifying records of military service during this conflict? This presentation will focus on Ohio Adjutant General, private manuscript, and published sources that provide election and service information from election and payroll records of the Ohio Militia from 1803 through 1815. You will learn tips on how locate names of soldiers who answered Governor Return J. Meigs and President James Madison’s calls for troops. Suggestions will be given for sources showing who received pensions for service or where veterans were buried.

Religious Records And Roots (GW20)
Church and synagogue records often provide valuable information for the family historian. However, tracking a church through the centuries can be a complicated process. This class will explore types of existing records according to a denomination's customs and potential locations of these records, covering both published and unpublished resources.

This session is ideal for those who want to find out more about the resources in the Ohio History Center’s Archives/Library.

Cornerstones of Genealogy (GW2)
This course establishes the foundation for all further genealogical research. It provides the beginning genealogist or family historian with the scope, understanding, and sources of information used to prepare a family tree or family history. Describes the uses and sources of Vital Statistics, Census Records, Land Records, and Probate Files. Includes topics such as military records, church records, identifying female ancestors, importance of source documentation, newspapers, family portraits, obscure sources, and record preservation. Summarizes special types of records available to add body to the basic information.

Finding Published Family History Resources on the Internet (GW27)
There are hundreds of thousands of genealogy websites on the Internet and we all would like to find our family's history online. This session will give you the online tools to help you find published family histories that are currently available on the Internet.

Newspaper Research for Genealogists (GW14)
Newspapers contain vast amounts of family history information beyond obituaries yet are often overlooked as a resource. This class will cover birth, death and marriage announcements as well as legal notices, estate, land, and tax information and community “gossip” columns. We will also discuss search strategies for locating newspaper holdings at the Ohio Historical Society through the online catalog. In addition, this workshop will introduce and demonstrate the use of Chronicling America and other digital newspaper resources for genealogy research.

Putting the Clues Together: Learning More about Your Family Photographs (GW16)
Did you ever think you could find out more about your old photographs? There maybe more information in those images than you think. Learning to sharpen your observation skills and picking up some pointers on how to date a photograph can give you new tools to use when doing family genealogy and research. Plan to bring a photograph or two and see what we can learn. This class will be hands on and focus on 19th and early 20th century photography.

Genealogy Forum (GW19)
Are you not sure how to start your family history? Do you have a genealogy problem or “brick wall” that seems nearly impossible to solve? Bring us your questions and we’ll guide you to search strategies and resources that might help you break through those genealogical “brick walls”. Even if you’re not sure what to ask, you’re welcome to come to listen and learn from others. Panelists will include representatives of the Columbus Metropolitan Library, Franklin County Genealogical and Historical Society, Ohio Historical Society, and Palatines to America-Ohio Chapter.

Family History Research: Civil War (GW30B)
Are you interested in how to research the experience of an Ohio soldier during the Civil War? Are you having difficulty identifying records of military service during this conflict? This presentation will focus on the three main types of war records: entry records (muster in rolls, draft records), service records (units soldiers served in, muster out rolls) and post war records (pension indexes and files, discharge records). We will also discuss the Ohio Adjutant General records, manuscript collections and books available at the Ohio History Center’s Research Room that can be useful in finding your soldiers and their service information. You will learn tips on how to locate names of soldiers who answered the call of President Lincoln and how Ohio filled and overfilled its quota almost every time such a call went out. We will also discuss county records (Recorders Office discharge records), county histories, and how to find out where veterans are buried.

How to Find Naturalization Records (GW33)
The United States is influenced by its history of immigration. Ohio has always been a destination for immigrants who were settling into their new country. Records of naturalization were created and exist in Ohio as a result of Federal law. This workshop will describe what an individual had to do to become a naturalized citizen. Research suggestions for accessing information about ancestors who followed the naturalization path will be highlighted using collections available at the Ohio History Center.

County Office Research: Focus on the County Auditor and the County Recorder (GW32)
Have you ever wondered how or why records in a county office were created? The county auditor and recorder offices create a variety of records that help us understand where and how our ancestors were living. Finding an ancestor documented in records like a tax list or a deed book may be the clue that sets you on the track to finding additional information. Representatives from the Franklin County Auditor and the Franklin County Recorder will explain the resources available, how to access the information, and what it is like to do research at a county office.
