BALDWIN-LIMA-HAMILTON CORPORATION RECORDS MSS 578 Creator of stationary/marine diesel and steam engines and locomotive diesel engines, including submarine engines, power plants, Liberty Ships, and Lima-Hamilton locomotives. BAKER ART GALLERY P 51/NN 5/E 52 Established in the 1870s, the Baker Art Gallery soon became the most important photographic studio in Columbus and was widely recognized nationally. BUCKEYE STEEL CASTINGS MSS 662/MIC 129/P 192 With its roots in an 1880s iron foundry located on the south side of Columbus, Buckeye Steel Castings went on to become one of the country's major suppliers of steel castings to the railroads of the 1900s and beyond. CENTRAL OHIO TRANSIT AUTHORITY (COTA) MSS 563 Founded as a public-operated entity in 1972, COTA had its roots in various privately owned companies that are documented in this collection. CHAMPION BRIDGE COMPANY MSS 817 Founded in 1871, the Champion Bridge Company was an early creator of wrought iron bridge works and built bridges from Ohio to Florida through the 1980s. CRESCENT SILVER COMPANY OF CINCINNATI MSS 1019 A rare view of an 1870s-era silver mine, located in the Colorado Territory and owned by businessmen of Cincinnati. CURTIS-SEEBERGER FAMILY PAPERS MSS 973 Includes the business records of Charles Seeberger, the inventor of the escalator. DOMINION EAST OHIO GAS COMPANY YHS MSS 0164 The East Ohio Gas Company was incorporated in 1898 and continues to serve Northeastern Ohio in the 21st Century. DONALDSON BAKING COMPANY MSS 818 The Donaldson Baking Company was the result of the merging of several Ohio baking companies in 1949. DUNZWEILER CONSTRUCTION COMPANY MSS 777 Incorporated in 1917 for general contracting work, the Zanesville-based Dunzweiler Company constructed a section of the National Road, the Roseville and Ohio potteries, and various churches, banks and schools. HUMPHREYS/TITSWORTH FAMILY PAPERS MSS 956 A collection documenting the medical and surgical partnership of Frank Humphreys and Dr. A.W. Titsworth, 1893-1931. JEFFREY MANUFACTURING COMPANY P 251 The Jeffrey Mining Manufacturing Company, established in 1877 by Joseph Andrew Jeffrey to produce the first power-driven coal cutter used in America, remained one of the largest family-run businesses in Columbus until the mid-1970s. LAZARUS FAMILY PAPERS MSS 352 The Lazarus Family founded the F. & R. Lazarus & Company in the mid- 1800s and Lazarus Department Stores became a mainstay in Ohio in the 20th Century. LEFFEL, JAMES & COMPANY MSS 155 In the 1860s, inventor and businessman James Leffel designed and built the double turbine water wheel and formed the James Leffel & Company to promote the product. LUSTRON CORPORATION MSS 861 Carl Strandlund founded the Lustron Corporation in the mid-1940s to develop prefabricated houses out of baked enamel steel. ROSEVILLE POTTERY COMPANY MSS 708/P 68/ P 69 Incorporated in 1892 and based in Zanesville, the Roseville Pottery Company was renowned for its clay-based products. SENECA MOTORCAR COMPANY MSS 972 Organized in 1917 in Fostoria, this early automobile manufacturer produced cars largely for overseas buyers until 1924. UNITED STATES POTTERS ASSOCIATION (USPA) RECORDS MSS 855 The USPA was formed in 1875 at the first national convention of the manufacturing potters in the United States. WHITE CASTLE SYSTEM, INC. MSS 991/ P 394 White Castle pioneered the fast food hamburger chain concept in the 1920s, and continues as a leader in the field today.
