Ohio-born photographer Albert Ewing traveled the countryside at the turn of the 20th century and captured the daily lives of those who lived and worked in southeast Ohio and West Virginia and along the Ohio River. Opening Jan. 9, 2013, at the Ohio History Center in Columbus, Faces of Appalachia: Photographs by Albert J. Ewing is the first exhibit of his work.
“Ewing is an impressive, thoughtful photographer whose collection tells the story of several Appalachian communities at the turn of the century,” says Sharon Dean, director of museum and library services for the Ohio Historical Society. “We must remember that photography was still a novelty and a luxury for many communities across the nation. Without Ewing’s efforts, we would not have this superb visual record of Appalachian life.”
