Weekend Encounters

Visit the Ohio History Center for a variety of weekend programs. All programs are free with admission and last approximately 30 minutes. 


Saturday, December 20

11:30am - Share the Holiday Joy: Card Creation Station

Explore decades of holiday card traditions and make one of your own to spread holiday cheer! Learn the history and purpose of holiday greeting cards and we will share your creations with local seniors to brighten their holiday season

1 pm and 3pm - Echoes in Time Theater“I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas”

Imagine a world without computers, mobile phones, and video games, a world where only half of the population has a TV set, about the same number have cars or telephones. For families, Christmas time was much the same as now, except your Aunty and Uncle arrived on a train rather than a car. Christmas Cards were more than a gesture, but for many an important form of communication sharing stories and news of the past year. Come walk down memory lane as you listen to Mabel remember and prepare for Christmas.

2 pm – Make a Collection Connection with Holiday Cards

Snowmen, reindeer, angels and glitter!  See examples of holidays cards from the late 1800s and 1900s found in the Ohio History Connection archives.

12 pm - Weightlifting Patriots:

One of the ways immigrant groups to Ohio maintained their cultural identity was through  the formation of athletic groups. Join us to learn about these different societies and see photos of them in action!

Join a gallery discussion highlighting the animals depicted in the pre-contact archeological artifacts on display.                 

2 pm - Make a Collections Connection with Ohio Art Toys

Remember the Etch-A-Sketch?  Or that perfect metal lunchbox? Stop by the Collections Connection station on the exhibit floor of the Ohio History Center to see examples toys made by the famous  Ohio Art company.  History Curator Emily Lang will be on hand to answer questions and help you get in touch with your inner child.
