Strategic Planning - Chart Your Organization's Future

Looking for help in planning your organization's future? The Ohio History Connection's Strategic Planning program can help.

  • Planning begins with identifying strategic issues, such as the need for a capital campaign, hiring staff, dealing with collections backlogs, attracting new members, and board relations.
  • Using SWOT methods (identifying strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats), the Strategic Planning program helps a historical organization identify strategic issues, which become the core of a written plan.
  • Over a two to six month period, Local History Office staff help you identify your strategic issues and outline objectives to address them.
  • The program results in a report from which you can lay out a clear plan to help your organization chart a future.

Needs Assessment - Identify the Best Next Steps for Your Organization

A Needs Assessment is a wonderful, inexpensive opportunity for leaders of Ohio's historical organizations to step back from day-to-day responsibilities and see their organization and its future in a new light.

The Needs Assessment program of the Local History Office brings to your historical society team an experienced, professional, and sympathetic public history "coach."  This colleague brings new perspectives to your institution and applies years of experience leading and assisting organizations just like yours.  In a one-day site visit with staff and board (whether paid or all-volunteer), s/he will help you identify the best next steps for your organization.

In the weeks following the Needs Assessment site visit, clients receive a 3-5 page report summarizing the finding of the visit and noting priorities for future action. The report is supplemented by technical leaflets and brochures to address specific aspects of a historical society's operation. In the past, Needs Assessments have addressed subjects such as:

  • Artifact care and preservation
  • Board member responsibilities
  • Volunteer recruitment and retention
  • Museum exhibits
  • Public programs
  • Collection management and inventory
