"An incalculable number of pieces of Ohio pottery have been rescued from attics, cellars, barns, and other hideaways and have taken their rightful places in museums and private collections."

-- John S. Stills
"Ohio Ceramics," Echoes, July 1958
Exhibits at Ohio Ceramic Center

PLEASE NOTE: On March 7, 2003, the property and all site administration and management responsibilities for the Ohio Ceramic Center were transferred from the Ohio Historical Society to Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio. Hocking College will continue working with the Ceramic Pottery Museum Association (CPMA) of Crooksville to operate the museum. The CPMA operated the museum as a partner with the Society and was the driving force in the establishment of the museum in 1971.

Ohio Ceramic Center The Ohio Ceramic Center is a museum devoted to the display of ceramic wares produced in east central Ohio. The museum consists of five clustered buildings housing exhibits and a demonstration area.

Clay deposits in the Zanesville, Roseville, and Crooksville area encouraged settlers to manufacture ceramic products here early in the 19th century. The industry grew during the late 19th century as local potteries turned to the production of highly decorative pieces. This "art pottery" remained popular until the 1920's. It is highly collectable today.

While visiting the Ohio Ceramic Center you will find these potteries represented: Alpine, Brush, Burley Winter, Cookson, Crooksville China Company, Friendship, Gonder, Hull, LePere, Longaberger, McCoy, Queen, Robinson-Ransbottom, Rockingham, Roseville, Shawnee, Star Stoneware, Ungemach, Watt, Weller, Worthington, works from local artist-Betty Ford, and a collection of bricks from National Brick Collectors Association.
