The Wright Earthworks

photo of the Wright Earthworks Part of Newark Earthworks State Memorial, this 50-foot long segment is one side of a large square enclosure that was an important feature of the original complex. The geometrical enclosures found at Newark were used by the Hopewell Indians (100 BC-AD 500) for social and religious purposes. Octagon Earthworks and The Great Circle Earthworks (formerly known as Moundbuilders State Memorial) are both additional local sites that preserve other features of this majestic remnant of prehistoric Ohio.

Although the expansion of the city of Newark has obliterated large portions of the mounds and walls of the original earthworks, important sections are preserved.
