1 National Road/Zane Grey
Museum (OHS) 800-752-2602 Zanesville area (Muskingum
County) The museum honors the celebrated novelist Zane Grey, whose
books created the image of the West. Zane Grey produced a number of best
sellers, including Riders of the Purple Sage. At least one of his
novels ranked in the top-ten best sellers each year from 1917-1924.
Remember his great western movies, with stars like Randolph Scott
through a special program. Sit back and relive childhood memories watching
the good guys triumph over the bad in a Zane Grey movie. After the movie,
tour the museum exhibits, including Zane Grey memorabilia and National
Road history.

Mansfield The
Big House at Malabar Farm 419-892-2784 Mansfield (Richland
County) The Big House is the former home of Pulitzer Prize winning
novelist and noted conservationist Louis Bromfield. His 32-room country
mansion is open for guided tours throughout the year. The house is fully
furnished with the belongings of the Bromfields.

Columbus In My Life and Hard Times, Ohio author James
Thurber recounted the most memorable events of his college years living in
and commuting by trolley from what is now the Thurber House. This literary
center is in a restored Victorian structure that the Thurbers once rented
from 1913-1918. Thurber also published hundreds of cartoons in the The
New Yorker magazine, before blindness overtook him. This place is a
book lover’s must!

Dunbar House (OHS) 800-860-0148
Dayton (Montgomery county) Tour the restored home of the first
African- American poet to achieve national recognition - Paul Laurence
Dunbar. The home is how he left it, complete with his desk, typewriter,
books, manuscripts and a ceremonial sword presented to Dunbar by President
Theodore Roosevelt. After touring the home, join us for an old-fashioned
ice cream social while listening to more about his life and works. The
staff makes Dunbar’s poetry come alive!
