Through Gateways visitors from ages eight to eighty can learn about and enjoy Ohio's fascinating past through a brochure that features one of the most extensive systems of state memorials in the country.

Look in Gateways to find our sites' hours of operation, locations and more about particular themes in American history and Ohio's contributions. You will learn about American Indian heritage, military history, settlement and transportation, African-American heritage, the state's leaders, social and economic history, and natural history.

The Gateway Concept

The concept of a gateway was selected for the publication's title to represent the OHS Gateway Initiative, a comprehensive capital improvement program the Society is undertaking in order to present an integrated view of Ohio's past. An important program goal is to make historical sites and their on-site educational resources more easily identifiable to people interested in various areas of Ohio's history by organizing sites according to theme. Another important purpose is to illustrate what roles historical sites play in American history, and how these landmarks relate to each other.

As one of the first steps, gateway or principal sites have been selected for many of the themes presented in Gateways . For example, Campus Martius in Marietta and Fort Ancient in Lebanon are serving as gateway sites for the areas of settlement and transportation and American Indian heritage, respectively. Enhancements have been made to these historical sites, and many more improvements are in store for other landmarks in the OHS system.
