CARLOS A. NORTON TO WORTHINGTON

Chillicothe March 5. 1812

Dr Sir,

I have had occa sion, more than once, this winter, to recommend others for appointments in the army I now make application, through you, on my own account.

If we have war, I cannot stay at home, idle. I should feel it my duty, to contribute, by personal exertion, towards the defence of my country. The new levies, I presume , will not be raised, unless we have war.

During the session of the legislature Mr. Caldwell, & others, voluntar: offered to recommend me, for a captaincy. Then, I declined their friendly offices. Reflection has, since, induced me, to regret, that I did so.

If I should be fortunate enough, to obtain the rank of captain in the army, I assure you, that neither the administration, nor you, will ever have occasion to regret the appointment. So long as war may continue, I will remain at my post; In peace, I shall be a private citizen.

If you think, I deserve what I solicit, I am sure, you will use your exertions in my favor.

But, appointment -- or no appointment -- you may rest assured, that I shall go with the American army, whenever it marches for Quebec.

I am, respectfully,

C. A. Norton
