JOHN BEVER TO WORTHINGTON George Town Pa. 11th Feby 1812 Honourable Thomas Worthington Sir I fear you will think me troublesome in writing you frequently on business of rather local and trifling nature, compared with national concerns, that most assuredly must engross a great part of your time and studies; however with deference I would mention to you, there is observed in the public prints that Congress are about to authorise the laying out and opening a road from the rapids of the Miamie of the Lake to the western boundary of the Connecticut reserve, agreeable to the treaty of Browns Town. it has excited attention of the people through the state particularly that part of the state in a So. Easterly direction from the So. western Corner of that reserve, viz, towards Canton New Lisbon &c they are pregnant with hopes it will take that di- rection to meet the immigration from Pennsylvania Maryland and Virginia through the state to the No West Corner and Continue within the Michigan Territory While some are doubtful the northern interest will endeavour to lead it along the Lake to answer Political purposes - you having a general knowledge of the geography of the State as well the United States and the interest that would result, The thing will in a great measure rest with yourself and have not the least doubt your good discernment will enable you in a great measure to direct the route of that road for the benefit of the state as well the United States; it is, unnecessary to comment to you who is so well aprised of the advantages it would be to the State & U.S. such as promoting sales of lands strengthing the frontiers & facilitating internal intercourse. I have not heard any thing lately respecting the removal of the Land offices from Canton as authorised by Congress their last session; flattering hopes are entertained when it is acted on by the President of the United States it will be fixed at the town of Wooster in the County of Wayne. The Legislature of the State this present session have organized the County and confirm'd the report of the Commissioners fixing the seat of Justice for that County at that town - the county & town are Populating perhaps with more rapid progress than any other in the state - at any convenient time will you do me the Honour of droping me a line on these or other things you may think interesting - I have the Honour to be respectfully Your Obedt. Servt, John Bever |
